Foreign regions

The Maldives consists of a chain of nineteen coral reefs (atolls) located in the Indian Ocean southwest of India and Sri Lanka and crossing the equator.
There are a total of 1196 islands on these atolls, of which about 200 are inhabited. One of them is Thoddoo Island, which is 1.6 km long and 1.2 km wide and is located about 60 km from the international airport in Male, the capital of the Republic of Maldives.
The Maldives has a tropical monsoon climate that is influenced by the large landmass of South Asia to the north. As the Maldives has the lowest altitude of any country in the world (no place is more than 2.5 m above ocean level) the temperature is consistently high and the humidity is also high.
There are two seasons in the Maldives: the dry season (roughly from December to the end of April) and the rainy season (roughly from May to November) which brings more frequent rain, wind and storms. Average daily temperatures in the Maldives range between 30 °C and 32 °C, practically all year round. At night, the temperature drops to a pleasant 24 °C to 27 °C. The warmest months are from February to April.

Attractive natural areas and locations

The island of Thoddoo is famous not only for its beautiful beaches, but also for its great snorkelling spots.
Sea turtles - sea karets - are also part of the underwater ecosystem of the coral reef. Five of the seven species of sea turtles that exist in the world live in the Maldives. The most abundant in the waters around Thoddoo Island are the giant and the right whale, which are critically endangered species. It is most commonly found in shallow lagoons and on coral reefs. Both species can easily be encountered while snorkelling or diving off the southwestern part of the island or can be observed from a kayak, inflatable boat or paddleboard as they regularly swim to the surface to breathe.
Snorkeling and watching turtles gives people an amazing experience, but requires us humans to be as considerate as possible to the turtles in return.
The island is also the largest producer of watermelons and papayas in the Maldives, but you can also sample other tropical fruits both known and unknown. The coconut palm has its own special place here and is widely used. The young green or yellow coconuts are the source of a refreshing and nutritious coconut drink, the more mature fruits are the source of coconut copra, fish are grilled on the empty shells and coconut fibres are used for carpet material. As the Maldives is a Muslim country, you won't find beer or other alcohol here, but you can have all the coconut milk you want.
